That didn’t take long. Yesterday Apple launched new 11.6 inch and 13.3 inch MacBook Air ultraportable laptops. Today the folks at iFixit have posted a photo gallery showing what the smaller model looks like when you rip it apart with your bare hands (or maybe some specialized tools).

Long story short, the vast majority of the space inside the case is taken up by batteries. Instead of using a normal 2.5 inch or 1.8 inch hard drive, the company chose to use solid state storage that looks more like a stick of RAM, which saves a lot of space.

The 2GB of RAM in the notebook is soldered to the motherboard, so it’s not going to be very easy to upgrade. You can also order the laptop with 4GB, but you’ll have to pay $100 for the privilege.

It might be possible to upgrade the storage though, since the SSD can be popped out and replaced pretty easily, although since the MacBook Air uses proprietary storage, you probably won’t just be able to walk into a computer shop and purchase an upgrade anytime soon.

You can find more photos and commentary at iFixit.
