Samsung Galaxy Tab news roundup

Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy Tab 7 inch Android tablet this morning at the IFA trade show in Germany. And ever since, news has been streaming out of Berlin like a gusher. Here are some of the latest updates:

Benchmarking the Galaxy Tab

Chippy at CarryPad took a few moments to run a couple of benchmarks on the tablet. Overall, it’s not the fastest machine out there, but it certainly scores higher than a typical smartphone. That said, Chippy ran the same tests recently on the Toshiba AC100 smartbook with better results — and the AC100 has the same basic specs as the upcoming Toshiba Folio 100 , which means that may be the tablet to beat.

You can check out Chippy’s video after the break.

Rooting the Galaxy Tab

What, benchmarks aren’t exciting enough or you? How about this, then? One guy figured out how to root the Tab. Not bad for a device that not only isn’t available to the public yet, but which as far as I know isn’t available outside of the confines of a trade show floor (unless you’re a Samsung employee).

Samsung Galaxy Tab apps and games

The Galaxy Tab has full access to the Google Android Market, which means it can run most of the games and other apps available for the Android platform. The folks at Android Central took a few of those games for a spin and they look great on the 7 inch display.

Samsung also packs the tablet with a few custom apps, and the video after the break shows some of those off as well.

I realize this tablet’s not yet available to the masses, but I would like to hear (speculation? Informed reasoning? pure guess?) about how useful it will be *as a tablet* (vs. tied via subsidy to Verizon or eventually others).

However, my excitement about the Galaxy Tab has been deflated: the price is a big disappointment. If the wildly popular iPad (which isn’t for me, but Hey, if you like it, you like it) has a 8-10 hour battery life, a 10″ screen, and starts at $500, while the 7″-screen Galaxy (which will have some pretty direct competition — i.e. Android tablets with similar specs, some with 10″ screens) starts higher than that, that seems … well, interesting at least. Unexpected. I was hoping for more like $350 or $400; I know that many phones’ unsubsidized prices are quite a bit higher than that, but it seems like this is — no surprise — head to head against the iPad; higher price for weaker specs isn’t what I was expecting. (An interesting data point, though, when people talk about the “Apple tax,” as in, the premium Apple can charge for being stylish and enduringly hip — as far as I can see, there’s no big Samsung Tax ;) )

The price is just speculation at this point, they haven’t released official prices yet and it’s likely to be less once it reaches the states anyway… But I agree, if the prices remains anywhere near what it has been rumored then they can forget it…

Access to the Android Market though should mean it’ll be very customizable.

    I want to tell Samsung,

I have a Samsung Q1u, I still am now thinking that the Q1ultra was not bad, and difficult to find a replacer, hoping for the Intel Oak Trail to wait 2011. I am needing a Windows system on an UMPC. In the Android OS, you still are now unable to find a supporting for the RAW image in the image viewer.

Seems Samsung’s new 7” Galaxy Tab has not a directly video output port (HDMI), which is needed some the additional expenses to buy a docking device for the HDMI output, even is the USB port, if it is like this, very bad!

a docking device was neither a mini-shape nor a slight weight, would more be the trouble in the applied side. I cannot imagine the users would be willing to carry and using those otiose devices during the journey. Would be willing a journey to carry an otiose thing?

HDMI or USB ports ought to get directly designed within a main body. And not a docking device!

Website zdnet.de has a news reported the pricing would be like below,

My God. Samsung Galaxy Tab is pricing 799 Euro! We knew that iPad is 499 Euro in Germany. And, the iPad is having an IPS screen in 9.7-inch, despite likely you like a screen 7-inch.

Samsung Galaxy Tab has two cameras, a frontal camera is for the cellphone and the Internet video, but the rear camera is absolutely a trash, merely seemed a pretext for Samsung raises up the price. Any one cheap of the compact camera would be better than the rear camera of Galaxy Tab.

The rear camera is absolutely unnecessary on tablet.

Samsung is probably already mad to want getting money. Well, we have to say goodbye Samsung, please get out. Apple will launch the 7-inch iPad in Nov, and the screen is also an IPS, not a TN screen.

In 2007, we have merely seen a few of UMPCs, and high-prices, but the 2011, we will get the much types and models!

I’ll hold off judgement until I see a US price. If it is < $500 unsubsidized and without a contract it could be a winner.

I have to say, this is starting to look very much like what I have been looking for.
