ExoPC Windows tablet now up for pre-order

ExoPC has started taking pre-orders for the company’s 11.6 inch Windows tablet. While pre-sales were initially limited to a group of 1200 early adopters, ExoPC is now selling the tablet to the general public — although you’ll still need to sign up for a ExoPC Forum account to get to the pre-order page.

The good news is that the tablet will run $649 Canadian and up, with a 64GB model running $749 CAD, or about $724 US. That’s about $50 $CAD cheaper than expected for the 64GB model. The bad news is that ExoPC will likely be dropping GPS from the top of the line 64GB model.

The company is also attempting to curb off any criticism at the curb by pointing out that while the tablet sometimes gets more than 4 hours of run time, ExoPC doesn’t feel comfortable promising more than 4 hours. So the tablet comes with a 4 hour battery life. That’s a pretty welcome admission in a day and age when most companies try to inflate battery life claims. On the other hand, until we see real world tests, we won’t know for certain whether even 4 hours is reasonable.

As an independent beta tester of their prototype, I consistently get more than 4hrs battery life. The problem is that if you constantly do CPU intense actions it will eat the battery. If you were to use this unit for surfing the web, playing flash games, Word documents and reading e-books for most of the time, you would more likely get 6hrs+ easily!

Count me in for one! Been waiting for a comic reader of this caliber for seemingly ever. And my poor eyes can read a full page of comic without scrolling (unlike the Ipad)

This product will most likely fail. Here’s why:

I have an Archos 9 Tablet that I “upgraded” with a 32GB SSD. The computing experience sucked, to say the least. I thought it was due to the resistive tablet screen. So….

i purchased a Jumper TT-01 from China. Specs included N450 processor and 10.2″ CAPACITIVE screen. I upgraded the memory to 2GB and downgraded the harddrive to an OCZ 60GB SSD (super fast). Unfortunately, the battery is only 3,000MAH delivering 2 hours of run time on Windows 7 Pro. Guess what. The computing experience STILL sucked.

I went out and bought a Sony P-Series one week after living with the Jumper TT-01. Oh yeah, and I have been using my iPad the whole time since the 3G version came out. Windows (any version, since I played with Fujitsu tablets using Windows XP Tablet and Windows Vista) just doesn’t offer a good enough tablet experience for the average computer user.
