Dissecting an 8 inch Android-powered iPad clone

  • Email

It seems like every day we see a report of yet-another-iPad-clone coming out of China. But there are a few things that make the latest tablet from Shenzhen Utopia a bit more interesting than most.

First, it has above-average specs for a cheap tablet, including a Freescale i.MX515 800MHz CPU, Google Android 2.1, 512MB of memory, and an 8 inch display. Second, someone has gone through the trouble of taking the cover off of this little guy so we can see what it looks like on the inside.

The tablet has an 8 inch resistive touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. It has two batteries, totaling about 5,000mAh.

It’s possible future models could have higher resolution displays, run Android 2.2 and offer capacitive touchscreens.

You can take a peek at the mainboard after the break, or check out more photos at shanzhaiben.com.

I would quite happily buy an Android tablet (from China or where ever) BUT without Android Market support then it is next to useless.

It is not so hard to load the APK files.

  • http://www.garysims.co.uk garysims

Yes, but not all applications that are in the market are available as .APK files and also where would you find them? Hunt each developers web site to get the apps… Not very convenient is it?

buy an Ipad and shut up! kkk

@Cícero Lourenço, Thanks for your brilliantly insightful comment, it was very helpful. Unfortunately not all of us A) have the money to buy an iPad, B) live in countries where the iPad is available, C) necessarily trust Apple (i.e. section 3.3.1 of their SDK license) to invest in their devices.

It was expected that there will be iPad clones in market. However as garysims says iPad is not available in all countries , more and more clones will come up in future.

Wouldnt buy an apple produsct if they paid me. Their restrictive policies on what I can and cant install is the deal breaker. I paid for it. Its mine. I’ll install whatever the hell i want.
