Update: Notion Ink Adam not delayed

The folks at Notion Ink want to set the record straight. Despite recent reports that the company’s upcoming Adam tablet wouldn’t ship until November, Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan says the tablet is still “on track.”

While he doesn’t provide a definite release date, the last I’d heard the tablet would be available this summer… possibly in August. So I’m going to cross my fingers and hope that “on track” means it will ship by August or sooner.

The reason for the confusion is that the Notion Ink will not be available in every region and country at the same time, and some areas won’t see it until November or later. But as Shravan points out, that’s true of most devices. The Apple iPad still isn’t available in India, for instance.

The Notion Ink Adam tablet features an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor which is designed to enable HD video playback and 3D graphics performance in low power devices. The tablet will also run Google’s Android operating system. And one of the features a lot of people have been excited about is the fact that the tablet will be available with a Pixel Qi display which is viewable outdoors and which consumes just 0.5 watts when the backlight is turned off.

Notion Ink says that the tablet will also be available without the Pixel Qi display. The version with the normal LCD will be less expensive, but the Pixel Qi model will offer longer battery life (when you turn off the backlight). The company is also testing another hardware platform which could reportedly lower the price and offer better battery life, but there aren’t any details about this new platform yet.

Good to know that the 'November delay' is not as bad as the rumors had made it! I hope that Canada is not going to be one of the delayed countries…

Seems pretty cool, and hopefully the version of Google Android OS it gets will be equally optimized by that time too. I don't mind waiting, but what I get after that wait better be good.

I'd like to know through what channels it will be (eventually) available in the U.S. Direct mail-order only? Big-Box stores? Amazon or similar online vendors?

Okay, I'll keep my eye out for it, but I would still enjoy a larger screen and an IR port. If they can make this replace the clipboard for 8.5×11″ documents then they have a hell of a seller.

0.5 watts! If you had a small solar panel it could double your battery life!

“the tablet will be available with a Pixel Qi display”

So, merely an option at some point down the line – which no doubt will forever be “real soon now”, as we have become accustomed with this vapourware as far as mass production is concerned.
