I have a feeling we’re going to be buried in tablets soon, with Computex just around the corner. But in advance of the trade show, here are a few of the latest tablet-related stories from around the web:

  • HTC is working on a tablet targeted at women interested in being able to use social networking features while watching TV.
  • Shogo has a 10 inch tablet has a Freescale ARM-based processor, a Linux-based operating system and a WebKit-based browser and support for HTML5 web-based apps.
  • A new Taiji Electronics tablet packs an ancient VIA C7-M processor and a fancy snap-on Bluetooth keyboard and kick-stand that makes the tablet a bit more notebook-like.
  • The Shun Ericsson R116 tablet has a 10 inch screen and Intel Atom N450 processor… but it looks an awful lot like a particular fruit-themed tablet.

And of course, the Apple iPad was released around the globe today. It’s raining tablets.

  1. Those who think Chinese tablet markets will go bust, don’t even realise that the world’s most famous gadget makers, actually don’t make their own gadgets. The hardware and software for those gadgets are built in the sweatshops of China, Korea, Taiwan and India. Then they just get “branded”, and you swoon over those brands. Case in point is IBM, whose famous Thinkpad laptops were made by Lenovo, who became so big, they bought over the business from IBM, and are now the world’s largest laptop manufacturer. I myself own a few chinese/korean gadgets, and they have a big support base of fans and modders, with active discussion forums and frequent firmware/hardware upgrades. I pity the Samsung Galaxy S, Dell Streak and other famous tablets, which have a bleak future against the mighty Apple iPad and the explosion of the Tablet PC clones from China/Korea. What happens when there’s a lot of competition? We consumers reap the benefits!! 🙂

  2. The manufacturers are all over the place with their specifications. It will be interesting to see which (if any) survive. Personally I want one with a 7-9″ pixel qi screen, at least 16 GB of storage and at least 1 SD/microSD slot, USB, HDMI, the ability to play 720p video (or better) smoothly, flash support, app. marketplace, a wide range of codec support, a battery (user replaceable) that lasts an honest 6 hours or better under normal use, bluetooth and wifi. Too much to ask?

  3. Brad, you need to cool it on the China tablet thing cause half of it won’t even be launched.

There will also be some being launched then going bust after a few months.

Then those who buy these tablets based on your blog entry will suffer.
