MSI SketchBook concept: Laptop with a built-in drawing tablet

Laptops have come pretty close to replacing desktop computers for most purposes over the last few years. They’re just about as powerful and they’re a heck of a lot easier to use in a coffee shop or on an airplane. But if you use a computer for specialized purposes, you may have to add USB peripherals that make laptops almost as tough to lug around as a desktop.

MSI’s latest concept device could change that — for some people anyway. The company has introduced a concept design called the SketchBook which looks like a typical notebook at first. But then you rotate the keyboard (not the display) to reveal a graphics tablet designed for the artist on the go.

There’s no word on a price or release date — or if this thing will ever even make it to  market. But MSI has been thinking outside the box a lot lately, and that’s a good thing. The company introduced a dual screen netbook concept earlier this year, as well as a PC-in-a-projector concept design.
