Archos 7 Home Tablet to ship in June

While Archos started taking pre-orders for the company’s new 7 inch Android tablet a few weeks ago, it looks like the Archos 7 Home Tablet won’t actually begin shipping in the US until June. Engadget reports that some of the folks who placed pre-orders may get their tablets before the end of May though.

As expected, the tablet will have a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel resistive touchscreen display and run Google Android 1.6. Out of the box you won’t have access to the full Android Market, but will instead be able to download some third party apps from the AppsLib store.

The tablet weighs just 0.8 pounds and measures less than a half inch thick. Archos promises up to 44 hours of music playback on a single charge — with the display off. Don’t expect that kind of battery life if you’re surfing the web or watching video. Archos does baost support for 720p HD video playback, which ain’t bad for a $200 tablet.

Update: It looks like Amazon says the Archos 7 will be released on May 17th. via SlashGear

Sounds like a great table until you get to Android 1.6. 2.2 is nearly out and you are just now hitting the market with 1.6?

And how easy will and Android upgrade be on this thing?

Yeah, that sounds like a cool device, but I'd want to know if Archos will work on updating the OS in a timely fashion. I don't mind waiting a bit between release of Android OS updates and this thing getting its update, but I don't want Archos dragging their feet keeping this thing crippled either.

This could be a super device if Archos can deliver at this cost, it is the same price as the Smart Q devices which came out months ago.. but they all used a slower CPU.

If I can mount this on the handle bars, Im getting this tablet.

I wish I liked resistive touch screens more… I don't, so that's one strike against this device in my eyes. I like all the custom software they bundle, but hate the inability to upgrade the OS, or get to the app store without hacks… I really wish Google would make that easier.

That said it looks like a nice device. Unfortunately for Archos my local Best Buy made the mistake of putting the iPad by the 5″ version of the Archos tablet, and the user experience wasn't even close, it just totally destroyed the device for me, especially since after using a capacitive touch screen, the resistive one seemed flakey and very hard to use. Oh well.

Android is possibly the best contender to compete with the Apple Mobile OSX but until Google opens up their App Market to more than just Smartphones then devices like the Archos tablets will continue to have a severe handicap.

Even the Motorola took time updating the Droid to the latest version, and it's a Smartphone. While tablets like the Archos have to deal with custom drivers, which the company has to develop on its own.

In addition the lack of access to the Android Market means either a limited hack or the company has to create its own limited App Market.

So for now these type of devices will mainly appeal to those wanting a more affordable device than the iPad but also don't mind it having limited app choices.

But hopefully, since Google itself is reportedly getting into the tablet market. We should see an opening of the Android Market and some real competition for Apple soon.

I did the same exact thing tonight, checking out the 5″ version firsthand. I've used plenty of resistive screens on Windows UMPCs and WinMo phones and the Archos 5″ definitely had one of the least responsive screens I've ever used on a device. Maybe it was just the abused floor model, but it definitely killed my interest in any resistive Archos device.

i reordered this device from amazon. for the price and wifi connectivity with all the preloaded apps i felt it was worth it. One bummer is its running an old andriod version and no word if or when an update may be available thru archos. unfortunately i had hoped by now to say that the archos 7 home tablet is useful but i have as of yet to receive it from amazon. at ordering it said would ship on May 17th, no such luck. i will be lucky to get this a few days before select stores start selling them.
