Nokia N900
Nokia may be best known for producing cellphones, but the company has been making portable internet devices such as the Nokia 770/800/900 for a few years. And last year Nokia introduced its first netbook, the Booklet 3G. So it’s not completely shocking that The Street is reporting that Nokia may be preparing to enter the tablet game.
The rumor comes courtesy of an analyst who has contacts at some of Nokia’s partners. So take it with a grain of salt. But with everybody and their kid brother coming out with a tablet to challenge the Apple iPad this year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen.
It’s not clear what kind of hardware or software the Nokia tablet would have. There’s a good chance it could run MeeGo, a new Linux environment that came out of the merger of Nokia’s Maemo project with the folks behind Moblin Linux, a netbook-friendly Linux project. But there’s also a chance that we could be looking at yet another Windows 7 tablet. Or you know, at nothing at all. It is just a rumor for now.
