More Microsoft Courier tablet details emerge

The folks at Engadget have snagged a series of new photos and some new details about Microsoft’s upcoming Courier tablet. It sounds like Microsoft is prepared to take on Apple’s iPad using pretty much the same strategy it’s bringing to bear against the iPhone: The Zune HD and Windows Mobile 7 Series operating system.

The Courier will reportedly weigh just over a pound and measure less than an inch thick. it features two screens, and when you close it up, it’s a little bigger than 5 x 7 photograph.

Under the hood, Engadget says the tablet will have an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset, which is a low power chip capable of HD and 3D graphics. The OS will be based on the latest version of Windows CE. But the UI should look more like the Zune HD interface than the Windows Mobile 6.5 user experience.

The Courier is designed to be a “digital journal,” and relies pretty heavily on stylus input and handwriting recognition. Engadget says it should be out later this year.

you dont know how much it hurts me to say this but i am actually looking forward to this. i really hate m$ and their ways, but it seems only they are in touch with reality when it comes to tablets.

netbooks had their day, but are becoming obsolete faster than you say obsolete. noone needs an 9″ atom netbook… give us usable tablets!!!

Will buy if this is in the $500 range. Exactly what I want from a Tablet PC but in a form factor that doesn't conflict with the laptop I already have. Hopefully it's light enough for me to carry around both.

Who is noone and why doesn't he/she need a 9″ netbook?

a netbook is just that, for the net… its simple small and meant to be used for basic on the go work, email and internet. a tablet covers all of those. you never sit down with a netbook and start writing an essay or paper. its not meant to, the keyboard is horribly small and the screen is tiny. its means for short bursts of work. nothing a tablet cant deliver on. ultraportable computers tho, thats another thing. a 12″ minimum. so… a tablet will be awesome, plenty of room for it on the market.

A 9' netbook hasn't been in fashion for quite a while. The top netbooks are 10' or 12', and for the most part they are fine for typing and are far more useful than laptops on the go due to their battery life. I like the courier concept, but try sitting down and typing for half and hour or an hour with a courier form factor? Netbooks, notebooks, desktops, couriers, and more will all have their niche to fill.

I actually think pen-based is a good idea. If I want a touch device (mostly phones) there are already too many out there with different purposes. The Courier could provide different functionalities and actually let me do some real work (not just anohter touch-screen device).
