Asus Eee PC 1005PE update replaces glossy lid with matte case

Asus is bringing out an updated version of the Eee PC 1005PE laptop. The new model will feature a new case design with a painted textured lid much like the one found on the Eee PC 1001P. In other words, goodbye glossy lid, hello fingerprint-resistant matte cover!

Spec-wise, the Asus Eee PC 1005PE-PU27 is identical to the Eee PC 1005PE-PU17. It has the same 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive, 6 cell battery, and Windows 7 Starter Edition operating system.

Unfortunately, it also has the same 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel glossy display. Matte displays are getting harder and harder to find, and even though Asus offers the budget Eee PC 1001P with a matte screen, the 1005PE is only available with a glossy, glare-inducing display.

The Asus Eee PC 1005PE-PU27 is available for pre-order from Amazon for $389.99.

Very nice, but a shame it's still glossy on the inside, and the glossy screen.

The 1005PE model I reviewed (UK) has a matte screen. But again, it seems to be a UK only model.

Having a glossy screen but a matted out layer is not something I like, but it is ok I guess.

Glossy screens get a lot of scratches even from a small dust particle.

The screens are glossy because they help to make the colors on the screen look better. If there was a way for a dull screen to produce just as vibrant colors, netbook makers would be all over it.

Yes, but the essence of netbooks is portability, and that means using it outside. Glare is bad for netbooks.

I'm quite honestly looking for an expert debate on the outdoor glare and matte netbooks. I'm interested in your experiences. Some glossy netbooks are worse than others? Which ones? Have you done a side by side comparison in the outdoors? It's a hot topic. There seems like no right or wrong answer. Matte is better at what? Why are the manufacturers going almost all glossy? I don't buy the showcase reasoning. There are lots of experts here, I'm really interested in any thoughts on it. People out there really need some guidance. Cheers!

I bought a 1005PE yesturday (Madrid, Spain) and to my surprise the screen is matte too. However the case and the inside are both glossy. I much prefered the look of the new matte cases. Suppose you cant have it all.
