LG GW990 smartphone to run MeeGo Linux

02/17/2010 at 2:09 PM by Brad Linder

I normally stay away from covering smartphones at Liliputing. But when the smartphone in question is a tablet-sized device with an x86-based Intel Moorestown CPU, a huge display, and also happens to be one of the first devices slated to run the new MeeGo Linux operating system? Yeah, that warrants a mention.

Gearlog reports that the LG GW990 will be based on MeeGo. Right now the pre-release version of phone features a custom user interface on top of Moblin Linux, so it won’t be a huge stretch to move to MeeGo, which is basically what we’re going to have when the Moblin and Maemo folks finish combining their code.

There’s not much more information about the platform, but the GW990 is a rather unusual phone with a 4.8 inch, 1024 x 480 pixel display and an 1850mAh battery good for 4 hours of talk time.

You know, this might compete with the Dell Mini 5. This unit looks a little clunky for a phone, but it might work. If it has Bluetooth with PAN support, it might function well as a tethered 3G modem. Thanks for mentioning it, certainly it warrants looking into, even if it is LG…

Don't forget, Maemo/MeeGo is NOT a smartphone OS! No more than a Windows netbook or slate running VOIP software is as well. MeeGo is a mobile computung OS, and this is a pocketable workstation class device with phone radios. So don't feel guilty.

Comparing this to anything running Android is short sighted. Both share common features, but MeeGo's robust framework support give it far more legs. Its like comparing the Droid to the N900. Once you use an N900 you get it. The N900 is just a Linux computer with a phonecall app.

All the better. My first thought upon reading your comment was “convergence”, for the (common for me) situation where a smartphone isn't enough and dragging out the laptop is too much. RDP from my old HTC PPC6800 is barely usable (read: PITA), but this device might just have enough screen real estate to be able to do more tasks without resorting to the clunker laptop.
