Asus: “killer product” coming in June

Asus CEO Jonney Shih says that the company has a “killer product” set to launch in June. The company showed off a number of new netbooks, notebooks, and other devices at CES in January, and it’s hard to say that any of them were really “killer.” But you can hardly blame a CEO for getting excited about his own company’s products. So it’s possible that one of these devices will be hitting the streets in June. It’s also possible that the Asus product in question hasn’t yet been unveiled.

Still, there’s a pretty good chance he’s talking about the Asus tablet that’s sometimes been referred to in the press as the Eee Pad. Asus didn’t officially talk about the device at CES, but there was a prototype hanging out at the NVIDIA booth, featuring NVIDIA Tegra 2 graphics and an undetermined operating system (although the smart money is on Google Android).

If Asus can bring the Eee Pad out in June for around $500, it could theoretically give the iPad a run for its money in the specs and performance departments. The question is whether Asus will be able to work out the kind of content partnerships that have made the iPhone and iPod Touch successes. Asus also doesn’t have the same kind of rabid fan base that Apple has, which means there won’t be nearly as many people clamoring to get their hands on the latest Asus product just because it comes from a company whose name starts with an A.

Of course, it’s also possible that Shih is just talking about the upcoming Asus eBook reader, or some other product entirely.
