I'm using Puppy on a Gecko Edubook right now. I have tried DSL, WattOS, Ubuntu9.10, and WindowsXP on it; Puppy leaves them all in the dust. It and wattOS are the only Linux distros that I know to work the sound on the Gecko.

Some distros require a kernel fix to boot the Gecko; as far as I know, they all do to run the sound chip. These fixes are available from Norhtec, be prepared to do some work in BASH.

I was told that I have one of the first that came out. It is the 701a. It has a panel for the PCI-E slot and for the memory. Even if it does not run, I plan to keep it.

My Acer Aspire One that is like that (I think, I have not checked).

Unfortunately, not all the 701's are that mod-friendly. Just to swap the RAM in mine I had to take the entire bottom half apart. It was ridiculous, and much improved on my 1000HA.

ReactOS is still in developement but I think it small - resource wise - size and it being free would make it an excellent netbook os; especially the netbook. One can not install it from an USB optical drive or flash drive yet. Once it does, I will try it on my Asus EEE PC. I think being able to run ROS from the SD card would make it excellent for the Edubook.

I have an Asus EEE 701a PC that one can replace the SSD quite easily. One just pops the cover off after unscrewing the two screws and pop in the SD PCI-E card. I wish they were all that easy. It was no more difficult than upgrading the memory. :)

I really like the idea of using AA batteries to power it.

Hello, I happened to have recently acquired an Edubook from another supplier. Have taken a few photos, and more importantly, ran a couple of benchmarks. Take a look at http://www.flickr.com/photos/46578721@N08/sets/...

[...] NorhTec Gecko Edubook + Puppy Linux: That’s more like it The NorhTec Gecko Edubook is one of the most innovative netbooks around when it comes to hardware design. It runs on rechargeable AA batteries, making it easy to find replacements pretty much anywhere in the world. The OS and all the data is stored on an SD card, making it easy to upgrade. And the CPU and RAM are on a single chip which you can pop out and replace just as easily as changing a stick of RAM in most notebooks. [...]

With USB 3.0 on the road to being the next "thing", then it might be that we will be dropping USB drives inside (or outside) that are very quick, and easy to install.
