Netbooks with PCIe expansion slots

One of the questions I get asked every now and again is why the Liliputing Product Database doesn’t show which netbooks have open mini PCI Express slots. The short answer is because this information can be rather difficult to come by unless you open up the netbook or get your hands on a detailed service manual.

Fortunately, Pcoketables Forum Member nightalon has done some of the heavy lifting by providing a handy list of netbooks available with open PCIe slots as of mid-2009. That includes the Dell Mini 9 and 10, Acer Aspire One AOD150, Asus Eee PC 1000HE, MSI Wind U100, HP Mini 1000, and a number of other models.

The list hasn’t been updated since April, so it’s a bit dated. Have any newer models to share? Let us know in the comments, or better yet, post your updates at the Pocketables Forum.

Oh, and if you’re wondering why a PCIe slot might be good to have, you can use this internal expansion slot to add WiFi, Bluetooth, or 3G capabilities. You could also add an SSD to some computer models. Or you can pick up a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator to add HD video capabilities to an Atom powered netbook. You can pick up a Broadcom card for under $30 on eBay.

It says Samsung NC10, but do they mean it has one PCIe slot which is actully occupied by BluTooth or does it mean ONE free (i.e. open)?

This is the first I have heard that the PCIe slot was open? I think that list just says how many slots not if they are OPEN.

The Acer Aspire One D250 also has an open mini PCI slot

    DV2 has one.

Some NC10's have two slots with one available (the other has the wifi) but the majority have only one PCIe (with the wifi card inserted). The traces are still on the board for the second slot but there is no connector. If you are (very) good with the soldering iron adding the missing connector shouldn't be too daunting or expensive.

The old Acer Aspire ONE AOA150 (8.9″) has a slot, but no connector :(

It would be nifty to get a cheap turn-off-able (for battery) mini-pcie video accelerator for my 1000HE, but I wonder if the Broadcom card would help with non-HD video. I'll have to take a look inside and see if there's an open slot. Also I wonder about these slots being dedicated for various purposes and the lack of documentation about that sort of thing.

Same is true of its sibling the eMachines 250 (from the Walmart $228 post Christmas sale).
