Intel AppUp Center App Store for Atom netbooks is now live (in beta)

During his CES Keynote today, Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced that the company’s App Store for Intel Atom powered netbooks is now live. It’s called AppUp Center, and it lets you download applications for netbooks running either Windows or Moblin Linux, although as far as I can tell, only the Windows installer is available right now.

I’m not actually using a computer with an Atom CPU at the moment, and while I was able to install AppUp Center, I got a message stating that I can’t sign in or create an account because I’m not online — even though I am. It’s not clear at the moment whether this is because of my CPU or some other factor.

If you’ve had a chance to try AppUp, let us know about your experiences in the comments. Intel says the first apps that are available cover games, health, education, entertainment, and other areas. There should be a mix of free and paid apps.

Intel eventually plans to expand the app store to work with devices beside netbooks including smartphones, televisions, and other consumer electronics. Some netbook makers are expected to begin shipping PCs with the AppUp Center preloaded, but for now, you can download and install it yourself.

+1 Thumbs down . Also got the oops error on a windoz computer, on Mac/VMware works after a registration with Amex (non US visa don't seem to be accepted).
Requires .NET fw 3.5 … dunno how they will make it work on Moblin.

Also no luck after download client just hangs and never enters AppStore. I also followed the “Frequently Asked Question” section and to no avail. I wonder why would Intel release a beta without performing real world test?

Android Market is horrible. Have to download an app just to make sense of it.

On topic. If this AppUp thing was strictlly for Moblin, then fine. Moblin's custom Clutter interface doesn't exactly play nice with Free Desktop standards.

Frankly speaking. Windows users are use to finding there own damn programs to run. Linux people are use to repostiories, or compiling from source thier programs.

I was able to install, register and sign-in, but… in order to install some free app I still need to provide my credit card number

ya no kidding, got the hell out of that “free” beta program in a hurry..I can see if you want to buy an “commercial” app but I tried to download a free one and they wanted CC info…jeez

This explains why you must provide a credit card, it's to verify address for export purposes.

@OlivierSeres – yes, only US and Canada credit cards accepted for this release. Stay tuned.

@tst – while the AppUp Center is in beta, the credit card processing is not. It is based upon the Intel Business Exchange, and all credit cards are processed by PayPal. Our program director is writing a more detailed response, in addition to the post by our engineering director which @Anon linked to. I'll post the link here when it goes live.

i couldn't even sign in… gave up and uninstalled. Intel shouldn't have released this. I wouldn't even class this as a beta version.

I downloaded the Intel AppUp store to see what was available… All they have is $#!T. They have very few free items, some .99 cent stuff, going up to a few that cost $600-$1,000 if you can believe it. Now tell me, who the hell is going to pay that much for DL content and not have the install disk and manual for backup and support.
