MSI launches new line of Pine Trail-based netbooks

Word on the street is that MSI is set to launch a new line of netbooks that will sport Intel’s new Atom N450 Pine Trail processor.

Honestly, at this point I’ll be more surprised when I hear rumors that a netbook maker is not planning on launching a new model with an Atom N450 processor. Asus and Dell already have new models in the works. And Intel says as many as 80 new models could launch soon. But I suppose it’s always nice to receive some sort of confirmation. And while there aren’t many details about MSI’s upcoming Pine Trail-based netbooks, Netbook Choice did manage to snag a picture of the new computer.

Netbook Choice says the new models will include the MSI Wind U130, U135, U140, and U160. Most will also ship with Atom N450 processors. For the most part, they’ll look like MSI’s existing 10 inch netbook including the Wind U100 and U123. The U160 is expected to have a “super skinny chassis.”

We’ll just file these model numbers and scant details in the rumor category for now. But I’d be shocked if MSI didn’t announce something between now and the start of CES in January.

Update: And now it’s official. The U130 and U135 models will feature 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, Atom N450 processors, Windows 7, and 160GB to 250GB hard dries. The U135 will have a chiclet-style keyboard and a somewhat larger touchpad than the U130.

You could get about 15% better battery life than on previous models. The U130 will sell for £229 in the UK. That’s about $369 US. The U135 will run you £279 ($445). It sounds like you’ll have to really want that wider touchpad to spring for that model.
