"ASRock sells the ION 330 nettop as a barebones unit, which means that it comes with everything but the operating system."

As far as I know the barebone means a "half-machine" from hardware side, e.g. a machine with case, power supply, motherboard (maybe ODD) but no RAM, HDD, etc. So it's more hardware related term than OS, and not valid for this PC.

"the Asus UL20A with integrated GMA 3150 graphics"

This GMA is the integrated one with the new Atom, the UL20A has the GMA 4500MHD

This ASRock machine is a interesting one, I already thinking about it, but it has a some (smaller) cons too, like the glossy finish and no ports on the cover and I'm afraid of the the two smaller fans in it. The Antec has a similar but little bit larger mITX case (ISK300-65) where 80 mm case fans can be used, but it's for the DIY builders. Maybe we can see new models at the CES.

From software side the free media center "XBMC" supports the Ion's video acceleration, so can be used with this machine for HTPC (unfortunately without TV tuner support yet).

You may be able to use a dvd player (or tivo) with a coaxial out in lue of TV signal if that's easier. I'm pretty sure that would work...

Don't forget you can overclock it to 2GHz easily and it will be stable. It will make the Windows Experience Index jump to 3.8 on the CPU which is significantly faster!

Brad,

Nice to know it can play youtube clips, but any nettop/desktop with a HDMI port really should be tested with Hulu on a 1080p HDTV as I suspect this would be a common task.

Hope you had a great Christmas!

Honestly, I haven't had time to test that yet so I left it out from the
review. I'll see if I can rig it up to test before I send the computer back
though. Unfortunately, the way the roof antenna in our house is wired, it
requires moving the computer out of the office and down to another floor and
hooking it up to a TV or another display to test. You can't really pick up
much with an indoor antenna or I would have tested it already.
