MenQ EasyPC E790: $80 and still barely worth it

MenQ has been pumping out ridiculously cheap mini-laptops for a little while. But the MenQ EasyPC E790 takes things to a whole new level with an $80 price tag, although it’s not entirely clear if that’s the price for consumers or the price that MenQ will charge retailers and redistributors.

Of course, you can’t exactly expect bleeding edge performance from an $80 machine. Instead, what you get is a 7 inch device with an 800 x 480 pixel display, QWERTY keyboard, 400mHz processor, 2GB of solid state stroage, and 128MB of RAM. The EasyPC E790 currently runs Windows CE 5.0, but the company plans to release a Google Android firmware update soon.

If you’re underwhelmed by the specs, keep in mind, the EasyPC790 is a step up from a product the company was pushing earlier this year with a 7 inch, 480 x 272 pixel display.

Charbox from TechVideoBlog got a chance to check out the MenQ EasyPC E790 and he’s posted a video, which you can find after the break.

As the saying goes 'you get what you pay for'. It might not be much but one does not pay much either. One should not expect Corvette performance from some thing that has a Chevette price tag. :)

This kind of smartbook must run with AA cells! It is hard to find a new battery!

    Can it run firefox?

Does it have a USB port for my Wimax modem?

Does it have a Wifi chip?

Yes? Then that's all I need.

All I want is a “Web Typewriter” — all it has to do is run firefox so I can read and write blogs and use Google apps.

    End of functionality.

    $80? I want 5 of them…

Sounds suspiciously like the netbook K-Mart is offering on Black Friday for $120ish. Same 2GB SSD, 128 MB RAM and 400MHz processor.

And who says you're looking for maximum performance? Doesn't mean that there's anything particularly wrong with it. Look at things from the right perspective — maybe you just want to use it to control little robots. Don't forget about what kind of CPU you have in your cellphone — not exactly a 6 core 3+ GHz.

John, It runs Windows CE 6.0 embedded, so NO choice in browsers. You get a stripped-down version of IE. It has 3 USB ports, WiFi, and an ethernet port, as well as an SD card reader. I got one from eglobal.com for $99.

  • Bivo

It will run Android as well as Angstrom or Ubuntu linux as they both have arm ports, so there is your firefox, flash may also work, if there is a port of Gnash, the open source flash player.

I purchased a netbook. Everything works ok except I can’t check my email because the browser is out of date & there is no software to update it The manufactorer has not put on the market yet and that is frustrating. The manufactorer’s name is MenQ. Android has not been added at this time.C. Walker in reply to John Bailo. I paid $79.99 & $99.00 for a gift from eglobal.com.
