Computers that use a disk-based OS usually have relatively slow, serial, flash memory.
Appliances that use an embedded OS usually have relatively fast, parallel, flash memory.

Which is one reason your NAS, NMT, NMP, Router, etc boots faster than your Netbook.
At least until Netbooks start using the faster types of flash memory. ;)
