Dual Core Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810T/TZ coming soon

Asus isn’t the only company gearing up to launch its newest thin and light laptops with Intel CULV processors this week. Amazon is now taking pre-orders for the Acer Aspire Timeline AS180T and AS1810TZ, both of which will be available on Thursday, October 22nd.

The Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810T will cost $599.99 and features:

CPU: 1.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300
Display: 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pxiels
Graphics: Intel GMA 4500MHD
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
RAM: 4GB DDR2
Storage: 320GB HDD (5400 rpm)
Connectivity: 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, Ethernet
I/O: HDMI, VGA, 3 USB ports, card reader
Mouse: multitouch gesture support
Battery: 6 cell, 5600mAh (rated at 8 hours)
Dimensions: 11.2″ x 8″ x 1.2″
Weight: 3.1 pounds

The Acer Aspire AS181TZ will run $549.99 and features:

Possibly the best news here is that Asus doesn’t appear to be launching different versions of these laptops on different sides of the Atlantic. When the company introduced the Acer Aspire Timeline 1810 with Windows Vista in Europe a few months ago, the company shortened the battery life and called it the Acer Aspire 1410 in the US.

Of course, if you don’t need the extended battery life, dual core processor, extra RAM and hard disk space and Windows 7, you can still pick up an Acer Aspire 1410 with Windows Vista for about $430.

So the differences between the two versions is the amount of RAM abd a different processor. How much “better” is the 7300 dual core over the 4100 dual core? Is it more of a multitasking difference?

Hmm, the appeal of the 1410 was its bang-for-your-buck: you were getting above-netbook specs in a netbook form factor for the same or less as netbooks with lower specs. The 1410 already comes with Win7 HP, and I'm assuming that you can get this battery for the 1410 (since, AFAIK, they're the same body/formfactor).

Dual-core in a “netbook” is nice, but not necessary, not for something that is going to be used as a netbook.

Been waiting on the price of the 1410 to come down, so I might just pick one of those up, or maybe an HP Mini 311. The folks at InsanelyMac are close to getting OS X running perfectly on it.

The differences in the 2 processors are:

SU7300 – 3MB L2-Cache, intel VT
SU4100 – 2MB L2-Cache, no intel VT

intel VT helps with Virtualisation, so running programs like VMWare, VirtualPC and the likes will greatly benefit from having the SU7300 over the SU 4100.
Windows7's own 'Virtual Windows XP Mode' will not work without a VT enabled CPU at all.

the 1MB Cache difference shouldn't be to noticeable since mainly 3D-Games or Video/Photo/Audio Editing/Encoding will profit from it, and since the CPU is a little underpowered for those kind of tasks as it is, you will be able to measure but not feel any difference here at all.
