Coby 8.9 inch netbook coming soon?

coby 8.9 inchElectronics vendor Coby first began showing a line of netbooks at CES in January. None of the company’s netbooks are available yet, but last month a 10 inch and 12 inch model started making the rounds on various web store pre-order pages. Now it looks like we can add an 8.9 inch model to the lineup.

Liliputing Forum member Lincoln Thurber spotted an 8.9 inch Coby netbook at electotronics.com, where it carries a pre-order price of $282.43. The laptop, which has the easy to remember model number of NBPC892XPBLK is also listed at a handful of other stores, but electotronics has the lowest price. Of course, I’ve never heard of this store before, which makes me a little nervous, but Buy.com also has a placeholder web page for the netbook, so it looks like you’ll be able to pick it up from that store as well once the netbook is actually available.

Here’s a rundown of the machine’s specs:

  • Display: 8.9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixels
  • CPU: 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Storage: 160GB HDD
  • OS: Windows XP Home
  • Connectivity: 802.11b/g WiFi, Ethernet
  • I/O: 3 USB ports, mic, headphone, SD card reader
  • Webcam: 1.3MP
  • Battery: 2.5 hour, 2200mAh

The specs are pretty much par for the netbook course, but the price alone should make this netbook a reasonably attractive option. The product image looks remarkably similar to the 10 inch Coby NBPC1022XPBLK. I’d think it was the same picture except that the 8.9 inch model seems to have a larger bezel around the display which suggests that both netbooks may have the same case even though one has a larger screen than the other.

I think he may be referring to the store in my post which is Elect0tronics.com …fishy. ;-)

Never heard of Buy.com? They are the 3rd largest etailer. Howie Mandel from Deal or No Deal is their spokesman. They have 20 departments.

    A new 8.9″ netbook?

    YES!

A little ray of hope for my dreams of a new 8.9″ Ion toy.

Too bad it appears to be another of those “8.9 inch” netbooks which are really just 10 inch devices with 8.9 inch screens.

Nice to see that a manufacturer known for low-cost,
consumer electronics is getting into the market.

We may yet see the $100 NetBook from some such manufacturer.

If it follows Coby's traditional product design, something will snap off or the screen will fall out. The only thing I'd ever had by them were headphones that fell apart within a day, and a shower radio that quit working as soon as it got the slightest bit damp…
