The Samsung N510 laptop is the first 11.6 inch notebook from Samsung to sport NVIDIA ION graphics. The laptop features a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, and an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display. And it’s available for pre-order from French retailer Pixmania today for 499 Euros, or about $718. Bear in mind, it will likely carry a lower price tag if and when it’s released in the US. Most computers do.

According to the Pixmania website, the N510 will ship on August 21st.

Lenovo also plans to offer a small laptop with NVIDIA ION inside. But the version of the 12 inch, Lenovo IdeaPad S12 with NVIDIA graphics hasn’t hit the streets yet, which means that Samsung could be the first to market with an ION-powered mini-laptop. Now if only they would make it available outside of France.

Well I am sorry to say my fortune telling is coming true. The price of Netbooks has been successfully and slowly pushed up and up towards the laptops. This will open the inevitable conversation “the gap is so small in price” what's the point of putting up with a device that is missing some stuff on a laptop i.e. dvdrom drive.

It is a sad day indeed but I see the end of the main driver for netbooks on the Horizon. Things have gone from a US$299 netbook to US$720. Don't say its got lots of nice stuff in it to justify its higher cost because that was the argument made in the standard Laptop discussions. “Buy more power and stuff in your laptop sir” (and we will raise the price) – even thoughyou don't need the extra stuff….

More likely, this is just ultralights coming after the generic 15″ notebook in its home territory. It's got NVidia graphics and 1366×768 resolution, and most people don't understand or care about the performance difference between an N280 and whatever's in entry-level notebooks today anyway.

Why would you want to carry around a bloated 6 pound brick instead of a svelte 3 pound machine? Just to get a DVD drive? A lot of people won't care enough.

In portable electronics smaller usually wins, even if it's more expensive.
