[...] Liliputing says: The short answer? If you value battery life over performance, go with the Acer model. If you want a bit more processing power and you’re cool with 3-4 hours of battery life, the Gateway may do the trick. [...]

The Timeline looks like it will be great. Then it just comes down to a slow and cheap vs. fast and pricier.

If the Timeline hits near $500, I'll probably buy it. If it's more like $700, I'll save the cash and buy the 751.

If that machine had a normal atom processor and chipset, it would get 6-7 hours of battery life.

Blame Microsoft and Intel for forcing these annoying compromises. You can bet that Acer wanted to slap a standard atom processor in both of these laptops, but they'd lose their ability to buy those processors at low prices if they did that. That would hurt sales of their low-priced 10" netbooks by making them more expensive than competitors.

Netbooks are in my opinion seriously going south. Look at the Gateway (3-4 hours battery, it looks like a brick and probably costs quite a bit more than the original Netbook price of U$400).

Is it me or is the netbook beginniong to look more and more like a standard Laptop (3-4 hours only !)

What is the difference anymore? And is the gap in pricing reducing between laptops and netbooks to a point where Netbooks are no longer compelling?!

I own the Acer 751h. And yes, it's slow at times. But it was the only 11.6" netbook in existence 1.5 months ago and I'm really enjoying the little machine. Such a perfect size for a netbook. But I wouldn't recommend it now that the 11.6" Acer Timeline will be hitting store shelves in the near future. It will look similar to the Acer 751h, but use a more powerful Intel CULV processor. That would be a nice compromise between portability, processing power, and battery life.

i would get an acer timeline laptop if i needed to get more processing power because i wouldnt go with athlon because of the battery life. Of course there is a bigger price and therefore it wouldnt be a netbook, but you do get a much more powerful machine than a netbook that is super sexy that runs very well with the free windows 7 upgrade, not to mention that it comes with more than 8 hrs of batt life. but for 550, which is a few bucks more than these bigger netbooks, i think that its worth it.

Nice review, especially as vaguely interested in the Gateway, in the Packard Bell dot m/a guise (though only with 3-cell battery in UK it seems - highly varied opinions on battery life, though not helped with PB only talking 800MHz models compared with the 1.2GHz ones in the stores).
