Asus Eee PC 900HA sacrifices keyboard to become a tablet PC

900ha tablet

One of the things I love about netbooks is the nearly-full sized keyboards. Try as I might, I just can’t be as productive on a touchscreen-only device. I do too much typing during the day, and rely on keyboard shortcuts to get much of my work done (although the gesture support on tablets like the Gigabyte TouchNote T1028X could certainly help you emulate keyboard shortcuts). But not everyone feels the way I do about keyboards, and so every now and again someone decides to gut a netbook, remove the keyboard, and throw in a touchscreen to create a dirt cheap tablet-style UMPC.

The latest project making the rounds comes from a member of the EeeUser Forums who turned his Asus Eee PC 900HA into a tablet. The Eee PC 900HA has an 8.9 inch screen, which in this case has been modified with a touchscreen.

If you’re wondering why this particular tablet has two colors, it’s because it combines parts from an Asus Eee PC 900HA and a 900A. The guts of the machine are from the 900HA, which has a hard drive instead of a small solid state disk, while the screen area comes from a 900A.

sounds like a good use for some of those <$200 refurbs. how much do the touchscreen kits cost these days?

With either USB or Blue tooth keyboard and mouse you can still use the device as if nothing happened to it :D

    Nice work!

Another possibility would be to replace part or all of the case of a Bluetooth keyboard, and extend it further back to create a slot to hold up the tablet when using it with the keyboard. I've seen tablets before with keyboards that work like this.

So, really the screen is just flipped..or rather the 900A's screen with a touch screen instaled was flipped?

It would be more work, a lot more specialized 3D CAD, but you could make/order a new case so you could take the parts and put the whole thing slimmer and place the ports in more advantageous spots then would occur on the upended 900HA.

Which is not to say the ports are TOO badly placed but your headphone and microphone jacks would be very high up. The USB ports are at the mid-point, which is not too bad but could be better placed if lower.

nO. 900A inverter/screen does not work on 900HA. It is 900HA screen.

As of new case etc.,no, it does not make sense to me. Ctrl-Alt-DownArrow flips the screen 180 degrees when I need to use headphone/microphone jacks. Main purpose of this mode was to make 9″ GPS device.
