Asus Eee PC 1101HA reviewed, battery life lauded

The Asus Eee PC 1101HA looks like an oversized Eee PC 1005HA. And like the Eee PC 1005HA, the first 11.6 inch Intel Atom-powered laptop from Asus gets excellent battery life. According to a review Laptop Magazine published yesterday, the Eee PC 1101HA can run for 8 hours and 44 minutes on a charge with the included 6 cell battery. That’s despite the fact that the computer has to pump graphics out to a larger, higher resolution display than those found on most netbooks.

On the other hand, part of the reason the computer gets stellar battery life is because of its low power 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU and Intel GMA 500 graphics, which balked at CPU-intensive tasks like playing 720p video in Windows XP. Netbooked, on the other hand, points out that the GMA 500 graphics processor is actually optimized for 1080p HD video playback. Unfortunately,. you need to be running Windows Vista or Windows 7 and/or a special application like Cyberlink PowerDVD9 in Windows XP.

I should be able to get my hands on an Eee PC 1101HA sometime in the next few weeks, and I’ll have more details to share with you then.

An explanation of the workings of DXVA (Direct-X Video Acceleration).

The GPU has dedicated logic for handling video, this is exposed through the driver and then through DXVA. The software players codecs must also support DXVA for the chain to be complete.

The drivers for the GMA500 may not expose DXVA support under Windows XP* but do for Windows 7 or Vista. “Special” players are not required all you need are codecs/player that support DXVA and a free one which is also the best is MPC-HC – also you must set MPC-HC output to EVR custom mode for DXVA to take effect.

    * I thought that had been fixed.
