Sony Vaio W overpriced in Philippines as well

  • Email

41You know how the Sony Vaio W is expected to sell for around $776 in Australia, while it has a list price of just $499 in the US? Yeah, apparently Australia isn’t the only region getting the short end of the stick. Yugatech reports that the netbook will sell for Php39,990 in the Philippines. That’s about $835 US.

Even in the US, the Sony Vaio W seems a bit overpriced. Sure, it has a decent looking keyboard and a high resolution 1366 x 768 pixel display. But that $499 price tag is for the netbook with a 3 cell, 2.5 hour battery. You can find plenty of netbooks with 5 hour or longer batteries for under $400. But I have to say, $499 still seems a lot better than the prices Sony is charging in other areas.

I live in Busan, Korea and a Costco just opened up near my house. I saw the Vaio W there for about, 1,200,000 won…or about $1000 U.S. They're crazy.

If it had that high resolution screen, an Atom Z530 processor, a bigger/better battery, and Ion…maybe. Otherwise, short of the higher resolution screen, I can catch an EeePC 1005HA with the 280 Atom and a 7 hr. battery for $359 on sale. Their price is waaayyy off.

That price is hitting the point where you'd rather spend for an actual laptop, instead, and just deal with shorter battery and less portability in favor of more muscle.

I think the people in these areas should exercise their power of boycott and buy competitive brands :)

That's why I stopped buying Sony products. Overpriced & not particularly cutting edge. Problem is a lot people will pay the price for what they conceive as a premium product from a premium brand name, just like Apple (flame suit on).

At least Apple offers something different for their premium price (be that good or bad). Sony isn't offering anything that can't be found elsewhere, they are just trying to offer it at a premium price.
