Adding support for 2-finger scrolling to Asus Eee PC 1005HA, 1008HA

The Asus Eee PC 1000/1000H/1000HE all had support for multi-touch trackpad gestures. For instance, while most older touchpad let you scroll through web pages and other documents by moving your finger to the far right side of the pad, on these models you can scroll simply by placing 2 fingers on the touchpad and dragging up or down. For some reason, Asus decided to disable this feature on the newer Eee PC 1005HA and 1008HA models, while keeping other multi-touch gestures like pinching your fingers together or pushing them apart to zoom in some applications.

But a number of users have found ways to enable 2-finger scrolling on these new models. One method involves installing a third-party app, while the other method involves hacking a Synaptic touchpad driver. You can read more about these tricks in two posts at the EeeUser Forums: #1, #2.

I've found the scrolling method on my 1005HAB to be far superior to any other laptop I've ever used – that includes ones with the standard scroll on the right of the trackpad, to the two finger scroll.

For those who don't know (and this is not a hack – it involves changing nothing at all) – scrolling is done by starting off at a corner and then doing circles – basically the same as on an ipod.

So – to scroll from top to bottom – do clockwise circles starting from the top right corner of the trackpad
- to scroll from bottom to top – do clockwise circles starting from the bottom right corner

scrolling left to right works basically the same way starting at the bottom of the trackpad.

I find that this is much better than the either of the other scrolling methods (single touch on the right, or dual touch anywhere) for scrolling lengthy documents. Also the fact that you can scroll horizontally is pretty cool – and not a feature of laptops I've had in the past.

Acer Aspire One has some multi-touch but you may have to turn it on in the driver. it broke when I installed Win 7 though. This might help me get it back

I have a 1005HAB, and what I can't figure out is that sometimes when I turn it on, 2 finger scrolling works perfectly; the next time I turn it (the computer) on, it doesn't work, though I can see the little scroll bar appear. The other wierd scrolling that has the funny shaped black thing when you tap with two fingers in the scroll bar at the side works consistently, but I don't like it as much.
