Microsoft introduces a wireless mouse for netbooks… or laptops

mobile mouse 4000

Microsoft has introduced a new travel mouse which it’s marketing toward netbook users. Really, the Microsoft Mobile Mouse 4000 is basically just a wireless travel mouse,  which is nothing new. Companies have been putting out tiny, portable pointing devices for use on the road for years. But I can’t really blame Microsoft for targeting their latest travel mouse at netbook users. After all, who wants to carry around a traditional mouse with a netbook that’s almost the same size?

The Mobile Mouse 4000 has a list price of $40, and should be available in August. It includes a tiny receiver that plugs into a USB port on your netbook, laptop, or desktop computer. The receiver sticks out less than a centimeter from the USB port when plugged in, and can be stored inside the mouse when you’re not using it.

This is just about identical to my Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse which I have had for 6 months now.

Microsoft introduces? more like Microsoft copies!

I just called this three hours ago…”Netbook Ready” will soon be on everything.

I just wish the power brick for laptops/netbooks had a AAA battery recharger builtin. Or, better yet, used wireless mice that took the small NB-4L lithium-ion batteries my Canon point-n-shoot takes and have a recharger for that in the power brick.

Yep, we'll see “netbook-ready” on everything… except Vista.

Arrghh… another USB mouse? Why not Bluetooth?

  • aylons

Men, no BT? This is ridiculous? Netbooks already have a shortage of USB ports, why should I waste one more with an appliance that works perfectly with bluetooth technology?

No Bluetooth? This is ridiculous! Netbooks already suffer from a shortage of USB ports, why should I waste one with a peripheral which works perfectly well with bluetooth? It's just dumb.

Woohoo, a peripheral that makes truly portable computer into luggable one (you need to have sensibly large smooth surface after all…)

  • DougC3

Four inches? I don't think they get it about portability. The Think Outside Travel Mouse is less than 2″ x 3 3/8″, has BT instead of dongle, and has been around at least 3 or 4 years.

But mice are one more thing to fumble with and lots of places don't have any flat surfaces, so I never use then with netbooks or laptops.

So Microsoft doesn't like netbooks, but they will market a mouse towards netbook users if they think they can make a buck. Wouldn't it be funny if it didn't work with Windows 7 crippled edition?

This is not all that terrible a business move – -
They probably make more money on a “MicroSoft NetBook Mouse” than
they are currently making on a “MicroSoft NetBook XP”. ;)

If they're marketing it to netbookers, then maybe they should examine their hardware requirements:

    CD-ROM
    USB Port
    1 AA Battery
