aaSNES1 – Your Acer Aspire One is in my SNES console!

Sure, part of what makes a netbook is the fact that it’s small, light, and ultraportable. But you know what else you can do with a small computer? Cram it into rather unusual places, like say, the shell of a Super Nintendo system. That’s what the folks at Asobitech are in the process of doing.

This little hack job requires 1 Acer Aspire One 8.9 inch netbook, a SNES, and the willingness to rip both apart. The motherboard from the netbook fits inside the video game console, but not without a bit of dremelling to remove some plastic.

While the new system doesn’t have an LCD display, it does have a DVD-RW drive — hidden inside a game cartridge. Hitting the SNES eject button even ejects discs.

The project is still a work in progress. But it’s already a pretty awesome looking little desktop PC that happens to be small, relatively cheap, and low power.

I plan on doing this with a mini-itx motherboard, just not with an SNES. I have a few viable candidates in old DVD players and several toys.
