Is Dell discontinuing the Inspiron Mini 9?

Dell appears to have removed its 8.9 inch netbook from its web site. Well, mostly. If you visit the Dell Mini site today you’ll only find information about the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 and Inspiron Mini 10v. You can still click on Mini 9 from a drop-down menu, but you’ll be taken to a page filled with information about… the Mini 10 and 10v.

The page for the Inspiron Mini 12 with a 12 inch display is still active.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dell phase out the Inspiron Mini 9. Many netbook makers are moving away from 9 inch screens and focusing on laptops with larger 10 inch displays and roomier keyboards. The Mini 9 was also the only member of the Inspiron Mini family that had keyboard with no Fn keys.

I was in the middle of configuring a Mini 9 this morning when the browser window “locked up” going between pages. When I tried to refresh it later, everything relating to the Mini 9 was gone. There were still some left over at the Dell Outlet when I last looked, though. Also, the Vostro A90 still appears on the SB site.

I'm not suprised either, I have both a Mini 9 and Mini 10 and never use the 9. I know it runs linux much better, but the keyboard is so miserable and that extra inch of viewspace lost on the display make it a dealbreaker (I only use the 9 for VPN access to work now). The mini 10 is not much larger or heavier.

Hopefully they are just getting ready to launch a new 9″ model, but I am not betting on it.

As this move is in accordance with Dell's leaked netbook roadmap (as was the introduction of the Mini 10v, and all indictaions are that the 'Mini 11' aka 'Argos' from the same roadmap will be a ULV-based notebook), I think this also means the end is nigh for the Mini 12, which the roadmap also showed hitting its use-by day in the next month or so.

    (See story at http://tinyurl.com/n2tokz).

This would leave Dell with only two real 'netbooks', both 10.1 inches – the Mini 10 and the Mini 10v.

I noticed over the weekend that even the retail stores that are selling the Mini 9, such as Best Buy, etc. have taken it out of stores for the Mini 10.

It's a shame really, the Mini 9 is a gem. I thankfully ordered mine in time before the cut off, it gets delivered tomorrow.

I've used the Mini 10 & 12 and disliked them both. The Mini 9 is perfect. I just couldn't settle for a netbook that bound me to 1GB of RAM.

That's ridiculous in these times. The Mini 9 was perfect. The Mini 10 failed in its upgrade shortcomings. The Mini 12 is just too damn big, underpowered and over priced to be a worthy contender in this market.
