Just in case you had any doubt that netbooks were popular, chip maker Intel says about 16% of notebooks sold worldwide are currently netbooks. The number is higher in western Europe and closer to 25% in Britain and Italy. That’s not bad for a product category that didn’t even exist two years ago.

According to an Intel executive, the Intel Atom processors that have proven popular with many netbook makers are starting to cannibalize sales of more expensive Intel Celeron chips. The profit margins on Atom CPUs tends to be higher than the margins on Celeron processors, but that hasn’t stopped Intel from introducing the CULV processor line for higher end notebooks recently, which is basically a glorified way of describing slower Celeron chips as low Consumer Ultra Low Voltage, or low power processors.
