Asus Eee PC 1008HA gets a May 15th UK release date

The Asus Eee PC 1008HA has already stopped by the FCC, found its way onto the Asus support site, and started showing up for pre-order. Now Asus has made it official: The computer will be available in the UK next week, on May 15th to be exact.

The Eee PC 1008HA will be the thinnest and lightest 10 inch laptop in the Asus Eee PC line. It weighs just 2.4 pounds and measure 10.3″ x 7″ x 1″. The netbook is also the first member of the Eee PC family to have a screen that folds down behind the keyboard, which saves space. It has a 1.66GH Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display.

But there is a downside. The battery is not user replaceable. While Asus claims the battery will run for 6 hours, if it gets damaged and needs replacing you’ll need to send it back to Asus for repair. And there’s no way to carry around a spare battery unless you want to use a universal battery that you can plug in as if you were connecting your netbook to a power outlet.

The Eee PC 1008HA will be priced at about £379 (or $572 US) in the UK. There’s no word on when this mini-laptop will be available in the US yet.

It as 1024×600 pixel hard drive?!? That is awesome :)

    Don't forget to correct that

It's great that Asus may be starting a thin and light trend, but the lack of a user-replacable battery would nix this one for me. But nice, for those who just want to have the thinnest, lightest netbook on their block :)

I was really excited about this netbook when I first heard about it. But when I sat down and thought about it a bit, it really isn't that much better than another netbook such as the 1002HA.

Pros: keyboard, good looks, new hinge, N280
Cons: non-user replaceable battery, “doors” on the ports, same specs as any other eee

The thing about it is this: the 1002HA measures 1.1 inches think. While this measures 25.7mm thick. What a minute, that is 1.01 inches or .09 of an inch thinner than the 1002. This might have a more 'rounded' effect to the bottom to make it look thinner but it really isn't thinner than the 1002ha.

This is a really nice netbook but I just don't understand all the hype of this being super thin when it really isnt. Anyway, I might think about picking one up depending on the reviews.
