Samsung NC20 now available in the US

Online retailer Newegg is taking orders for the Samsung NC20 laptop. The NC20 is a bit large to be considered a netbook. It has a 12.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display and a full sized keyboard. But it weighs just 3.3 pounds and bears a more than passing resemblance to the smaller, lighter Samsung NC10 netbook.

Aside from the size difference, one of the main things setting the NC20 apart from the NC10 and other netbooks is the processor. Samsung resisted the urge to place yet another Intel Atom processor in this laptop, and instead chose to use a 1.3GHz VIA Nano U2250 processor with integrated VIA Chrome9 graphics.

From the reports I’ve read you probably won’t notice a huge difference in performance between this particular CPU and an Intel Atom chip. But that’s already an improvement over VIA’s older C7-M mobile processors that were showing up in netbooks last year. They were significantly pokier than the Intel Celeron and Atom chips used by netbook makers. And VIA does have a few more powerful Nano processors in its arsenal, so future notebooks and netbooks using the Nano platform might be able to outperform your typical Intel Atom powered netbook in some areas.

Newegg is charging $549.99 for the Samsung NC20 with 1Gb of RAM, a 160Gb hard drive, and Windows XP Home.

I am thinking the Nano will see more use in nettops (along with beefier graphics) than netbooks.

No they didn't. I just looked at it. It's there. I'm excited for this personally. I've been in the market for a netbook for quite some time but have been held back by the relatively small screens. A 12″ seems like a good tradeoff between a netbooks power and cost, and a full notebook's size and screen. I'm just deciding on whether to go with this or Dell's Inspiron Mini 12… hm.

It looks like they cloned my Q45, which is a lot more powerful and has an optical drive. Plus I paid less for it here in France (the model was discounted heavily by the phone company which carried them, as well as the akoya)

I got an X61s before Christmas, the basic config was CAD 540 + tax (14%). For that price, you could get a 2.7 lbs laptop w/ 12″ screen (but admittedly, lower res), 1 gb of ram, 80 gb hd, 1.6 Core2duo and intel 3100 graphics. I see no point in spending the comparable amount of money on this samsung.

At the time I was eying NC10, but couldn't really justify getting it over X61s. I am really glad I got a thinkpad instead of NC10.

I asked Newegg if it comes with the rumored 5900maH battery, or the one Laptop magazine reviewed – 5200maH. I got a non-answer – to see the Samsung website. Nice. OK, it would be nice, IF, the Samsung website had the NC20 on it…

A friend got this in HongKong, VERY nice, still not available in Canada though, which is very annoying, and can't buy through newegg either. They offer it on the US website, but don't ship to Canada. Their CDN website doesn't list it.
