Samsung N120 available for preorder

The Samsung N120 is an interesting laptop. It has a 10.1 inch display, which would lead you to believe that it’s a standard run of the mill netbook. But it has a case and keyboard similar to that found on the Samsung NC20 – which has a 12 inch screen.

The secret? A big bezel around the edge of the screen. While this bezel does allow Samsung to give put the speakers on the front of the unit instead of behing the screen or on the bottom of the case, I’m not generally a fan of large bezels. I am, however, a fan of full sized keyboards. And that’s what you get with this unit. So if keyboard size matters to you more than screen size, this computer might be worth checking out.

Portable Monkey discovered that the Samsung N120 is available for preorder from a number of stores, with prices ranging from $442 to $474.

The N120 has an Intel Atom CPU, a 10.1 inch screen, a 160GB hard drive, and weighs 2.8 pounds.

Sounds like a viable product – there are a lot of touch-typists in the world.
And who really wants to look away from the lecture/presentation while taking notes?

??? Even with my very large hands I can type at full speed on the NC10. I don't consider this to be an “ultra portable”. Maybe if it had a 12″ I could understand this unit for some buyers, but with a 10″ screen it is a mystery.

A little more room and drop the price by dropping the screen size?
I agree – it does push the limits of a “NetBook” – but it may have a place in the market.

The fact it cannot address 2GB still bugs me…sure 1GB is enough…but this stinks of Microsoft not wanting netbooks to have 2GBs of RAM. It just bugs me!

I understand completely. You just want to know you've got as much headroom as you need, because it's impossible to predict what kind of memory needs future usage patterns you adopt might need.
