Gigabyte Booktop netbook that thinks it’s a desktop on sale in Taiwan

booktop-taiwanThe Booktop M1022 is one of Gigabyte’s more unusual netbooks. This little guy has a bit of an identity crisis and can’t decide if he’s a desktop or a notebook. At first glance, it’s a pretty standard netbook with a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, and all the usual goodies. But when you tilt the Booktop on its side and toss it into a docking station you can use this netbook as if it were a desktop. You just need to supply your own keyborad and monitor.

Of course you can do exactly the same thing with any netbook or laptop that has a VGA output and a few USB ports for a mouse and keyboard. So I’m not entirely sure why you’d need a docking station.

But if you’ve been waiting to get your hands on a Gigabyte Booktop M1022, and you happen to live in Taiwan, it looks like you can pick one up today. Netbook News.de reports that the laptop is now on sale in Taiwan for the equivalent of about $549 US.

But the computer also has connectors for the monitor, keyboard and mouse. So
you don't really need a docking station to achieve this effect.

“Why would you need a docking station”

Well if the docking station had the connections for the monitor and keyboard, mouse it would be useful from a convenience factor

If this docking station doesn't then I agree the potential desk space it provides is of minimal value.

In this world of convert your netbook to touch screens I am sure it wouldn't be dificult for an enthusiast to fabricate a docuking station with two usb ports and a vga port. You just need to find a netbook with all of those connections on one side of the device to connect to the docking station.

Every laptop/netbook should have a similar docking station as a standard option! Every day 5-10 times I have to plug and unplug the power cord, the ethernet adaptor (no wireless in the office), the display port, audio out, and USB hub — it would be wonderful just to put the laptop in the dock and be done with it.

that's a port replicator, not a docking station.

and the point of it is… port replication. keep peripherals securely attached to one base unit, which you can than securely attach or detach from the laptop. no messing around with three or four different cables every time.
