Compal working on Google Android netbooks

  • Email

compal-logoCompal is one of those companies you don’t hear that much about in the US, because the company doesn’t stamp its name on products. But Taiwanese-based Compal makes notebook and cellphone hardware for some of the biggest computer makers. Now DigiTimes reports that Compal is interested in building a netbook that will run the Google Android operating system.

According to the report, Compal doesn’t have a distributor for this netbook yet, and is shopping the idea around to notebook vendors. So in other words, we have no idea if and when these netbooks would make it to market. But it’s yet another indication that at least some hardware makers are interested in seeing Android make the jump from a cellphone-only operating system to a full desktop OS.

I think they should be marketed as portable internet appliances and not “regular computers”. If custoomers understand these are limited machines they may have a more favorable view of them when they actually try them. At least it may reduce the return rate.

This is all utterly dependent on what the “desktop-like” software ecosystem for these Android based Netbooks turns out to actually be. I need to browse, write, and maybe lightly game and chat. It doesn't seem like a tall order, but I've never been one to underestimate companies' ability to not give me what I want…
