A thorough examination of netbook screen sizes

screen-sizes

You may have noticed that netbook screens tend to come in standard sizes with standard display resolutions. That’s because there are a handful of display panel makers that actually supply most computer makers with the screens that find their way into netbooks. Eee PC Italia put together a good list of existing screen sizes and resolutions for netbooks (as well as a few larger mini-notebooks).

Here are the results in a nutshell, but make sure to head on over to Eee PC Italia if you want more information about the exact dimensions of each screen size and which netbook models use which screens:

  • 7 inch - 800 x 480 pixels
  • 8.9 inch – 1024 x 600 pixels
  • 10.1 inch – 1024 x 576 pixels or 1366 x 768 pixels
  • 10.2 inch – 1024 x 600 pixels
  • 11.6 inch – 1366 x 768 pixels
  • 12.1 inch – 1280 x 800 pixels

I could swear I’ve also seen some computer makers claim to have 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel screens but I’m not sure I’ve seen one with my own eyes yet.

There are versions of the hp mini1000 that come in 1024×600 in a 10.1″ and 8.9″ screen. Best buy has them, but for some reason the hp web site did not.

And the HP-2133 at 8.9 inch for 1280x768pixels.

Had the hp mini1000 with 1024×600 in a 10.1….which was just a touch small for my regular use and I returned it.

Much preferred my Dell Mini 12 with the 12.1 1280×800. The additional screen space was awesome for web access…cutting down the scrolling enough to make it worth accepting the Dell's keyboard (not near as nice as the HP keyboard).

But then my Dell died….and currently using an older Sony ultraportable with 10.6 inch display (1366×766) and the higher resolution 10.6 is a nice compromise between lower res 10 inch and 12 inch. I predict more “netbooks with 10.6 to 12 inch displays.

There were reputedly a few models with ~9″ 800×480 screens, though they may all have been vapourware like the Vanderled Jisus.

    11.6″ FTW

This is very helpful information – thank you. I’m working on a website redesign, and I want to be sure the design is reasonable for netbooks.
