Intel could be working on a 2GHz Atom chip

intel-atom-logo1Right now Intel’s Atom CPU line tops out at 1.66GHz with the Atom N280 chip. But rumor has it that the company is working on a few new chips in the Z5xx series that will have clock speeds of up to 2GHz.

According to HKEPC, Intel’s new Atom Z550 CPU will run at up to 2GHz with a max TDP of just 2.4W, which isn’t much higher than the power consumption on the current Intel Atom Z520 and Z530 chips. HKEPC also reports that Intel is working on a Z540 CPU that will run at 1.86GHz and a new low power Z515 CPU that will scale betwen 800MHz and 1.33GHz with a TDP between 1.4W and 2W.

All three of the new chips will have integrated Intel GMA500 graphics, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, VC1, and WMV9 video decoding.

Good lord! I sure hope SomeOne™ ports OS X to the Z5xx processors…

“a new low power Z515 CPU that will scale betwen 800MHz and 1.33MHz”

    I hope you mean 1.33GHz.

Just think of the power savings at 1.33 MHz !

I have been thinking lately that I have been dreaming too much about faster, stronger better. What the real goal should be is thriftier, less power consuming, and more refined. The Atom as it is now is more then enough chip for a netbook. I see the N. American market slowly being convinced to climb in the “scary van” with promises of tech-candy. Believe me when you get pushed out of that van in two years you won't like what you see, it will be a world of Win-Intel-Dell pimpin’ netbooks that $750+ and the only options go up in price not down.

    Look out kid
    Youre gonna get hit
    But losers, cheaters
    Six-time users…

The 1.86Ghz Z540 has actually already been out for almost a year now, but hasn't made its way into many netbooks because of its high cost. It is available in the Japanese version of the VAIO P: http://www.slashgear.com/sony-vaio-p-186ghz-ato…

    Monkeyking,

I think the ARM based netbooks will take on the simple/cheap end of the market that the other manufacturers have abandoned. I suspect the reason for the feature creep is you can hide more profit margin in a more expensive netbook.
