IBASE IB888 Atom-based motherboard is just 3.5 inches

If you thought the motherboards used for netbooks were tiny, you ain’t seen nothing. IBASE just announced its latest 3.5 inch system board, the IB888. That’s right, it’s a complete mainboard that’s small enough to fit in a 3.5 inch drive bay.

The IB888 is designed to use the low power Intel Atom Poulsboro series processors running between 1.33GHz and 1.6GHz. It has a single RAM SO-DIMM which supports up to 2GB. There’s support for VGA and DVI video output, 8 USB ports, 1 SATA connection, and an SD card reader. The board includes integrated Intel GMA500 graphics, which means you won’t likely be playing 1080p video with this little guy. But if you’re more interested in low power and small form factor devices than HD video and graphics performance, the IB888 is pretty sexy.

I wonder if there would be any use for a Netbook case with two motherboards inside? Not that I can think of a reason that wouldn’t be better served with just a bigger boards with beefier CPU/GPU.

But all the same you could likely do something interesting with two physically separated machines sharing a common keyboard and screen. There would likely be no cost advantage to doing that instead of running a protected “software” virtual machine, but who knows if the motherboards are cheap enough and if your security need fit the bill…?

Amazing they burned valuable space on and IDE connection. The chipset says it supports 1xSATA, I don't see it on the board.

It appears to me one of the biggest barrier we will soon have is the size of our inputs and some of the common components. If you can make everything small not just the CPU, GPU and memory you could easily shrink it down to the size of a Tic-Tac box…if you could then find a way to cool it.

Looks like a great little board, but the picture seems to show that it uses IDE rather than SATA, unless I just can't see it?

IDE is used for SSD drives. There are plenty of them at a very low cost.

no SATA on IB888 (IB883 has it), but there is mini PCI-E. I have the board.

its right in the middle towards the left. Its one of those mini sata connectors that they have in netbooks. Its white and has “850JB” on it.

This is the mini PCI-E x1 expansion slot. Good thing about it is that you can install a Broadcom HD decoder to playback HD video:

so there is no SATA controller but there is a way to connect a PCI-e SSD drive like the ones in the laptops, they come with the controller.
