Deal of the Day: MSI Wind U100 for $300

msi-wind-u100-amzBack in December I started to notice that the price on the original MSI Wind U100 with a 3 cell battery had fallen to around $300, but it wasn’t clear whether this was a permanent price drop or just a holiday sale price. With several new models hitting the streets in 2009, it looks like the $300 MSI Wind U100 is here to stay.

Amazon is currently offering the netbook for $299.95, with free shipping.

The Wind U100 has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and runs Windows XP Home Edition.

Or for just $30 more, you can pick up a newer MSI Wind U120 with the same basic specs, but a 6 cell battery that should provide around twice the run time.

You can read more about these netbooks in the Liliputing Product Database:

The $30 dollars is worth it for the extended battery.

I have the 3-cell U100 and love it*.

Now let me explain the asterisk. I love my U100 now. I hated it with the stock touchpad. They ship it with a Sentellic pad instead of the standard Synaptics. The Sentellic is vastly inferior (you can't drag to scroll or set touch zones, and the sensitivity is akward and uncustomizable), but you can buy a Synaptics pad from ASUS and do a hardware mod (details here http://forums.msiwind.net/hacks-and-mods/the-to... WARNING, this is not for the inexperienced!). It took some work, but I have a great netbook now.

However, with the Eee 1000HE shipping for as low as $350, the Wind may not be worth the effort. A buddy of mine has one and it's pretty sweet (though bigger and heavier than my Wind). I got mine for $260 from NewEgg's Open Box section, though, so I'm happy.

True, but the overclocking and the upgradable RAM make it worthwhile, as well as better compatibility with OSX.
