Asus launches Eee PC 1002H

In an ongoing effort to confuse the heck out of us, Asus has launched yet another netbook with a name that’s strikingly similar to an existing model. The Eee PC 1002H is almost exactly like the Eee PC 1002HA (full review), but it has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU instead of a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, and features the new Asus chiclet-style keyboard. It’s also shown in white on the company web site, while the 1002HA is shown in a dark gray/charcoal color. The new netbook will also be available in pink and black, while the 1002HA is gray only.

Here’s a rundown of the specs:

CPU: 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280
Display: 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixels
RAM: 1GB
Storage: 160GB hard drive
Wireless: 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.0
Webcam: 1.3MP
I/O: 3 USB ports, headphone, mic, flash card reader, VGA port
Battery: 5 hours
Dimensions: 10.4″ x 7.1″ x 1.1″
Weight: 2.6 pounds

No word on the price or release date yet, but with the Eee PC 1002HA going for about $415 on Amazon, I can’t imagine the new model will cost more than $450 or $500.

All this needs for me to buy one is a 720P screen and the ION processor. Once that model is announced, I'm sold.

I give Brad a lot of credit. He seems to be able to keep track of all the different models. I gave up a while ago. When I need to know which model is which I just visit the Product Database.

I agree, Asus' naming scheme is quite confusing.
And what about the news about cleaning up the model strategy some time ago?
Seems like this rather meant that they will concentrate more on 10-inch devices in the future.

Asus is kind of weird, they put a winner on the market, the 1000HE. Why would anyone want to buy any other Eee PC unless they really don't care about the battery life at all?

As a recent 1000HE buyer, I agree. Maybe the 1002 series is aimed at people who think, “That little, me want, me buy!” and think about battey capacity later

what's so silly about all these models is MOST are not available at your local shop… why would ANYONE want to carry so many products just in case a customer wants a particular model?

I'm guessing people come in to buy one model and usually leave with something else close to the original specs.

or worse for Asus, another brand that looked better or was a better price.

granted, their pricing is fairly competitive but you can pick up other machines around that money and the odd rebate special can make something else better value.

if you've ever worked in retail where there are lots of similar products, you'd probably know the 80-20 rule. 20% of a range sells 80% of the sales value. how much easier is to look at the Dell machines and go “9, 10 or 12 inches?”. or Acer “9 or 10?”

for a company sprouting “simplify the line”, there is little evidence the message has started to work it's way thru the company products…
