Asus Eee PC 1004DN with DVD drive due out in April

The Asus Eee PC 1004DN is the first Asus netbook to sport an optical disc drive. Heck, it’s one of the first netbooks from any company to make room for a disc drive. While I’d originally heard that this model wasn’t scheduled for release in the US anytimesoon, Asus filed documents related to the 1004DN with the FCC in February, which would indicate that the company does plan to release the computer here.

Now DigiTimes is reporting that the computer could be available as soon as mid-April, with a price tag somewhere between $531 and $590. It’s not clear whether that’s the US release date or a global launch date.

The Eee PC 1004DN has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU with the new GN40 chipset, a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, and a super multi disc drive that can read and burn a wide range of CD and DVD formats.

DigiTimes also suggests that the ultrathin Asus Eee PC 1008HA “shell” netbook is scheduled for release in May.

OK, so I need to start making my “this is not a netbook” list:
    - NO internal optical drive.
    - <100% keyboard
    - >8″ screen

    But…
I think cheap low power processors will feature in the next generation of laptops, which will have pretty similar specs to netbooks…

Nearly $600? Asus has truly lost it's way. It is a sad day. Bigger, heavier, more complex. Remind me how this is a good thing in a netbook please. What happened to the cheaper, smaller, lighter, simpler machines that we all knew and loved? I thought the Samsung NC10 was pushing the boundries of size, features and cost when it first came out. Tells you how much I know.

I want a slot loading DVD drive in my netbook. Why? Travel. I wouldn't need to encode a bunch of AVI's to the hard drive or to an external drive… just pop a disc in and enjoy a movie on the plane or at a hotel.

I think it's a fantastic idea and I'd be willing to pay up to $50 extra for one. I don't like the fact that the picture shows a tray-loading DVD drive though. For me, it's gotta be slot loading.

Maybe Dell will make their 10″ or 12″ with an optional slot loading DVD drive. That would be awesome.

If there was a netbook with a 720P screen, ION processor and slot-loading DVD drive, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Finally we are going to get a taste of that GN40 chipset! Man, if they released this netbook with HDMI out, your could easily throw DVDs up on TVs left and right. I can dream…

Do I hear the sounds of feature creep?
Creep? S… they already inside the wire and going to rush us at any moment!

This is not a netbook in my mind, the optical drive puts it in notebook territory as does the price. It's basically an under powered notebook with a low res screen and smallish keyboard. Bah!

Are they going too fast in the market? That really upsets other ASUS users that just bought the 1000HE or the 1008HA!

    Is this news/reporting?

“super multi disc drive that can read and burn a wide range of CD and DVD formats”

What DVD burner does not fit this criteria?

I think Asus is pretty dedicated to improving their products and giving us more quality choices. And wow, they’re doing it really fast, too! It wasn’t so long ago when they first released the Eee PC. I read this blog that said the 1004DN may start a trend of netbooks with optical drives. I wonder about that as well. Wouldn’t that be exciting?
