Just how small is the Sony Vaio P?

While the Sony Vaio P features a keyboard that’s enarly as large as those on many netbooks, the overpriced computer is smaller. Much smaller. How much smaller? Jenn at Pocketables set out to show you with a rather impressive photoshoot displaying the Sony Vaio P next to other mobile computing devices.

The image at the top of this post shows a Samsung NC10, an HP 2133 Mini-Note, and the Vaio P. But Jenn didn’t stop there. She also pulled out a Sony Vaio TZ to compare the Vaio P with a larger subnotebook, a series of UMPCs ranging from the OQO Model 2+ to the Fujitsu U810, and a handful of MIDs including the Nokia N810 and the ARchos 5. Just for good measure she even threw in a folding PDA keyboard, a video game case, and a few phones including an iPhone 3G.

Sony has always made notebooks with great specs. But my experience with compatibility and reliability has been bad. I'm not going to buy another Sony.

Actually I'd love to see a real netbook configured like this, with trackpoint and without trackpad (I'm dextrous and have good corrected vision so far . I think it blows the OQO type stuff out of the water. You can't beat the clamshell configration.

Sony sent me a funky brochure for the Vaio P. Heavy bond paper with a leather-like felt for the envelope Inside a glossy quad fold brochure that is shaped and looks like the Vaio P. What is nice is you can see the size and even see how your hands would fit on the keyboard. What is interesting is the advertising seems geared towards female buyers. They really push that 'maxi pad' imagery for the women using it..

The tag lines are 'Go Lightly' , 'The world at your fingertips', 'Style and Substance' and 'A flair for accessorizing.' Not tech-guy speech being presented at all, and as I said the imagery look like they are trying to capture women.

What I noticed just holding the brochure is that th screen is far smaller then it could be, a 8.9″ screen in the cover space and even a 9.4″ screen will fit. That extra inch of screen would help enormously in my opinion.

As much as I love the size, I really don't understand why it has to cost so much money. Aside, perhaps, from its laughable screen resolution and the Sony name? However, I'd love to see other manufacturers make smaller netbooks with pointing sticks instead of track pads. It's a novel idea, and I think it could work.

Screen resolution may be an issue, but I think you could do something similar to what Sony has done, but without QUITE as high a resolution. There is plenty of screen bevel on the edges of that Sony to play with! Maybe a 10″ 1280 x 600 screen?
