On Firefox always showing a tab: I think there is a configuration setting for that. Also there is an add-on to hide the top row (File, Edit...). But I would not bother with either. Instead, learn to use F11 to toggle full screen mode. Makes browsing much more comfortable. If you type cntl-L to enter a URL, or cntl-K to enter a search term, Firefox is smart enough to temporarily display those fields. However, I'd recommend toggling back to regular mode before using alt-tab to go to another application. F11 actually works in several other applications too - like Gimp. Even Microsoft Word.

You won't find it in the basic add and remove programs section. What
you need to do is hit Alt+F2 and type "gksudo synaptic" into the
dialog box (without the quotes). This will pull up the Synaptic
package manager which has far more programs in it than the simple
add/remove programs.

I was wondering if anyone could share with me how they installed Gimp on their Hp Mini 1000 Mi because when I search it in the add/remove programs it doesn't come up? It says that it can be installed in the review so I am looking for perhaps a mini walk through? I am new to Linux. Please help!

Hi,
The price for the Netbook with this configuration is lowered so much.
I just bought an China branded MINIX M1000 (www.minix.hk).
The system configuration is almost the same as other big brand and the price is so much lower at US$289. Comparing with my friends ASUS and ACER, apart from the product design, I cannot see the difference at all on speed and performance. I think the price trend will go further lower towards the end of the year. And the competition is still so keen.
Leu

It's dirt easy to throw on Netbook Remix. Use USB ImageWriter to toss UNR 8.04 on a USB stick. Plug it in and boot your Mini. Press F9 to select your boot drive. Boot from the USB stick. Press enter. Wait. Reboot. Voila!

So, how hard is it going to be to just get rid of the HP interface and throw on the netbook remix?

There's one hack that Ubuntu applied to the HP Mini's symantic interface which I don't like. When updates naturally flow to your machine, you are presented with a popup/notification icon saying updates are available, but clicking it opens the Update Manager that says the exact same thing with an 'Install Updates' button.

The difference is that the actual list of *what* is being upgraded is gone. This includes the summary (with the checkboxes) and the description pulldown.

Note, apt-get and aptitude still work as expected, just Update Manager is crippled, IMO.

You wrote: "Second, the update feature has been disabled, which means there’s no simple way to install security updates for Firefox."

Not true. This setting is standard with ALL major Linux distributions, since all programs (packages) get updated through system update, so no need for individual update routines in each program. (BTW: for me, this is one of THE main advantages of Linux over Windows: never worry about keeping each program up-to-date anymore. A simple e.g. "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade" does the job for the whole system and all programs installed.)
