Dell Inspiron Mini 10 now available, customizable

dell-mini-101A day after the first order page for the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 popped up on Dell.com, Dell has launched another order page. And this one lets you customize your computer… a little.

The base model starts at $399 and has a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, 802.11g WiFi, a 1.3MP webcam, and a 3 cell, 24Whr battery. It comes in black, but for an extra $30 you can get the computer in white, red, pink, blue, or green. And for an extra $50, you can upgrade the CPU to a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 chip.

There’s no sign of the upcoming higher resolution display or TV tuner. But you can add a Spring mobile broadband USB modem for $280.

Terrible timing, as I just got my Mini 9 last night! Really, though, other than the cooler-running Silverthorne in the new one, I'm fine with what I've got now. BTW: I absolutely LOVE the thing. I spend all night putting Win7 on it due difficulties getting a boot sector written to PNY flash drive, but it runs Office 07 as fast as my desktop (although multitasking is not advised) and is extremely readable for me. Even Flip3D is ridiculously smooth (yes, the Mini 9 can run Win7's Aero with full transparency/3D)
(Actually, looking at the customizable page, the Mini 9 still has the N-series Atom, so it looks like the title is a typo)

I presume the piece above should refer to the Dell Mini 10, not 9.

The Dell mini 10 is now also released in the UK, with much the same story.

As a twice Dell customer, I had been looking forward to the Dell mini 10. However, I'm not interested in this release. The Dell mini 10 is not competitive with other makes at present.

Yes, there some tempting items BUT

o Price is excessive after customising away from the very basic spec.!
    o Only 1GB memory
o No Solid state memory option
o Low spec. battery option only
o GPS, Screen resolutions & other options already flagged by Dell are not available as options
o There are “promises”/rumours of some of these things being corrected in the indefinite future, so why on earth should potential customers buy this now and be disappointed with it in a few month's time? Does Dell think its customers are crazy? Do they really think they will buy another Dell mini later in the year, or wait while the world marches on?

All this rules the Dell mini 10 out as a serious competitor for my money, especially when combined with its apparent lack of upgrade-ability. A cynical lack I should say in the case at least of the soldered memory and the misleading pre-launch hype

Calling planet Dell! There's a depression on – you have to try harder, you are loosing customers.

Some might buy this thing, but I won't, not unless Dell change their marketing approach before I go with what used to be my Plan B.

    Very disappointed.
