Top netbook news of 2008

I was thinking of writing up a list of some of the top netbook related news items from 2008. But it turns out that the folks at Eee PC.net beat me to the punch — with a little help from Techmeme.

So if you’re feeling nostalgic, check out Eee PC.net’s excellent list of the top stories from the past year, parts 1 and 2.

It’s kind of funny to see that one of the top stories from January 2008 was a rumor of an Asus Eee PC with a 9 inch touchscreen display. Heading into CES next week, what’s one of the things I expect to see? Touchscreen netbooks. Of course, we’ve been expecting those for over a year and so far very few have made it to market. I’ms till not convinced that a touchscreen makes much sense on a clamshell style netbook, but hopefully we’ll also see some convertible tablets like the new Intel Classmate/CTL 2Go PC.

I was reading all day long in various sites how touch is stupid (jkontherun), how umpcs are the interesting form (the usual umpcportal line) and so forth.

you got it right babe … touch swivel is the 09 netbook form – remember the m912 and the fujitsu p1630 is already there.

Want to take a minute and thank you for this site.

I wasnt sold on the netbook idea when it first came out but now have two of them in our household. All I know about netbooks I get here. Yeah, there are other sites but there is never enough time to just surf around them all.
This is the place I come to keep up to date even though were not in the market for another (would love a 10in but dont think the wife would go for it!) and the first place I recommend to friends/family/coworkers who want to know more.

Advertise your netbook database a bit better on your front page.
Products sounds like something you want to buy. You should emphasize that list with the 66 different netbooks available.

Keep up the good work and let's hope the rest of the tech media takes a better look at what you do since they are still behind the curve (these are the same tech pundits who claim that Nintendo Wii is a fad) on any technology that doesnt come with a gala unveiling.

I still would like to know why NO ONE (Sony?) has come out with an IBM Thinkpad red nubbin instead of a trackpad. Space is so much at a premium that some companies put the buttons of their trackpads on the side which many dont like. Seems like a natural fit for the form factor.

Exactly. I've been meaning to mention this for a long time. I think a lot of surfers probably overlook this very valuable resource thinking Brad is just selling something on the “Products” link. Oops, I just looked up and saw he alreaady took your advice
