Mouse Computer LB-F1500 netbook has a Super Multi Drive

Asus isn’t the only company that’s decided it’s time to try slapping a DVD drive into a netbook. Japan’s Mouse Computers has announed the LB-F1500 netbook, which features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and a DVD Super Multi Drive.

The mini-laptop comes with Windows XP, inclues 802.11b/g support, and reportedly gets up to 5.2 hours of battery life. The DVD drive can handle a wide array of DVD-R and DVD-RW media and has a maximum write speed of 8X. The LB-F1500 will retail for 64,800 yen or about $726 US.

Well, at 3.5 lbs that seems a bit heavy for a Netbook. I don't see having optical drives as forbidden for Netbooks but once you over 3.0 lbs you have to question if is worth it.

An optical drive is nice but then you start spinning it; and at the point you wonder if the added weight, the power draw, heat and the other issues really make sense.

Yes, I'm quibbling over a mere 8 oz. My feeling is put in anything you want as long as you keep it under 3 lbs, line in the sand statements may seem odd but that is one I'll stand behind.

Sounds good to me, there has to be a boundary somewhere.

Otherwise we will end up with “Net-Books” that require a
complete vehicle built onto them just to move them around.

I am with you. The optical drive can stay at home…or in your business laptop. Netbooks don't need the bulk, weight or power drain.

Not to mention that adding in the optical drive means they have to pay full price for XP. That's why it's so expensive. The drive should have only added about $100, making it about $500 total.

Yes it's expensive but 64,800 yen is just a little above average price for a newly released 10 inch netbook in Japan ($726). MSI Wind gets released for around the same price for the newer models for example.

But totally agree it's just a waste of everything (money,energy,space,weight) on a netbook.

Hmm, Kodai's post got me thinking. This machine violates Microsoft's netbook limits for XP. But I thought that MS didn't sell XP at all on other machines. You have to use Vista. So what gives? How did they get XP on it?
