HP sale offers high end tablet at near-netbook prices

There are a few of things that set netbooks apart from full sized laptops. They have to be small, light, and relatively inexpensive. You can’t just lower the price on a 15 inch notebook and call it a netbook. But HP is offering a promotion that lets you pick up a thing, light, and powerful tablet PC for just $600. And while HP is likely running this promotion to clear the warehouse and make room for the newer tablet PCs that are set to replace the tx2500z, I’m still pretty happy to see a $600 tablet.

In order to get the special pricing, make sure to follow all the steps listed at LogicBuy. You won’t be able to apply the coupon code until you get to the last step in the checkout process, so it’ll look like the computer costs $800 until you get to the end.

If you follow the steps, you’ll end up with a 1.21 inch touchscreen Tablet PC with a 2.0GHz AMD Turion X2 dual core CPU, a 250GB HDD, 3GB of RAM, 802.11b/g WiFi, a 1.3MP webcam, and Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. You can also get a free printer if you happen to need a printer.

I’d probably recommend choosing the 8 cell battery, which adds an extra $39 to the price. HP’s web site says both the 6 cell and 8 cell batteries will provide 2 hours and 15 minutes of battery life, but I’m going to go out on a limb and assume the 8 cell battery will actually provide a bit more power unless HP has done something really weird with these batteries.

Sure, the tx2500z is a bit larger and heavier than your typical netbook. But not much. And it’s got a heck of a lot more power and a price tag that’s no higher than the Asus Eee PC S101. If we’re lucky, we’ll see more deals like this in the future. But this particular sale ends Wednesday.

This would have been the end of my netbook search, but by the time I configured it, the deal was gone.

It's a bit bigger and heavier than a notebook, but also has much better functionality.

I have an HP TX25xx covertible tablet PC and it totally blows away any netbooks in almost every way except size. I picked mine up in August for $750 CDN and it has wireless a/b/g/n, 3gigs ram, 320 gig HD, DVD burner that's REMOVABLE, and a dual active/passive touchscreen. There's a bunch of other stuff too, but the main point I'm trying to get across is that the size isn't too much greater than some netbooks, but it's capabilities are. How many netbooks can be slipped into a pocket, or even a purse? I've looked long and hard at what's being offered, and at what price, and am not impressed. This may very well change with the new Nvidia chipset and touch-screens. The new Intel Classmate with that chipset running inside would be a real winner and might just get me to jump of the 'fence'.
I was doing some chrismas shopping today and checked out the laptops and.. I could pick up a 14.1″ lappie for LESS than a netbook, and it would have way better specs. I know, I know, it's not as 'portable' as a netbook, but the netbooks aren't all that portable either. When I can slip one into a jacket pocket, then the 'price for portability premium' will be justified, but they're not there yet. ..Willy.

Slightly off topic but I got to see my first HP 1035 10 inch netbook today…. wow!
It was next to an Acer One 9incher and I think they had the same dimensions but the keyboard was amazing. Big wide keys..

Its not as nice looking at the HP Mininote 9inches that I saw this summer whici looked aluminum but the keyboard on this 10 inche made me drool.

My question is: are most 10 inch netbooks the same dimensions as their 9inch counterparts but with a bigger screen?

I have a 15 inch Acer beast at home. I cant move it without spraining a few joints. It is nowhere close to the Acer One I use or the Dell Mini my wife uses.

Btw, BOTH FIT IN MY WINTER COAT (along with the neoprene sleeve)
Actually, they fit in three winter coats I have.

The 7inches were even more portable but too small for me to use so its not only a question of size but balance.

You paid 750$? I paid $289 for my Acer One and my wife paid 329$ for her Dell.

Stop trying to justifying your personal usage as some kind of barometer to what other should use.

Well, at first, with the eeePC, the 9 inch model was smaller, but later some companies came out with 10 inch models first then put 9 inch screens in them later for a more economical model. You can click on “Products” above and go to the Liliputer database chart, then check (tick) the units you want to compare and use Brad's comparison tool to see the dimensions and screen sizes of selected units side by side.

Also, you can click “show 9 hidden criteria” or select “datasheet” for more specs and data.
