HP Mini 1000 starting price drops to $359

HP has lowered the base price for the HP Mini 1000 netbook by $40. For $359 you can now pick up the mini-laptop with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 8.9 inch 1024 x 600 pixel display, 512MB of RAM, and an 8GB solid state disk. If you want a larger screen, more RAM, or additional storage capacity you can pay extra for thos features.

I’ve been playing with an HP Mini 1000 for the last few days, and it’s a nice little netbook. It’s significantly smaller and lighter than the Asus Eee PC 1000H I’ve been carrying around for the last few months. But the battery doesn’t last as long and while the keyboard is excellent by netbook standards, I find it still has a few quirks that take getting used to. I’ll post a more detailed review in the next day or two, but suffice it to say that $359 is an excellent price for this machine, although you might want to invest in a RAM upgrade.

This is pretty darned good.
I think teh Mini-Note has the most solid keyboard of all the netbooks.
$359 for a 10 incher is great. 20-30$ for a 2GB stick of ram and this baby will be humming.
Let's hope they release the Linux version soon, could be looking at at 300$ machine then once you get rid of the Microsoft tax.

Now if only Staples could get their heads out of their ass.
Came back from there, they had the Acer One at 400$ and Asus 10' for 750$.
Which is funny because my sister bought the Linux one 2-3 weeks ago at 289$ and you guys are showing the very nice HP for 350$.

Shop people.
Shop around.

I just reread it carefully.

The HP Mini 1000 is the 8.9 INCH model… i glazed over that part the first time… its an extra 50$ for the 10 inch screen.

Seems to me that it should be the 900 and 1000 series but they consider 9 inches to be the base model for the 1000 series.

Always read the fine print i guess..

so that's 409$ for the base model with a 10 inch screen….
a linux model should bring it back to 350$ hopefully.

HP uses low-end parts for the Mini-note 1000 as well. For example, the SSD is actually slower than the HDD, which spins at 4200 RPM. That's sad.

So what's the verdict on the heat build-up of the 1000? Is it WIND cool or fry an egg on it 2133? I was thinking of picking one up, but I hate a hot netbook….

Thanks! Just as long as it's not like the 2133 and it's flesh searing bottom (boy that was a painful summer when I was wearing shorts!). I was afraid it was the case design/shape that caused the heat build-up (I'm sure the aluminum body had a lot to do with it too…).

I know a lot of people — myself included — are planning to buy a netbook in the next four to six months, but haven't made a decision because things change so fast. I'd love to see a post anticipating developments during that time, especially with CES coming up, and whether it's worth waiting.

Say, if you wanted something with at least a 720p screen, good keyboard, and great battery life for a reasonable price. Thanks!

Overall it runs pretty cool under normal use conditions (web browsing, word
proecessing, etc). I watched a 44 minute Hulu video last night and the area
directly under the touchpad got pretty hot, but the battery was just a bit
on the warm side.
